On the 10th of May 1961 at a meeting of the combined leaders of Open Brethren Auckland churches the suggestion was made of the possibility of a “Home for Aged”.
A group got together for the first planning meeting on July 3rd, 1961. The need for such a home was established and many planning sessions followed.
Several properties were considered including locations in Ladies Mile, Kelston and the North Shore. None of these sites were ideal. Then in 1964 in Mt Eden 42 Edenvale Road and 10 Punga Street came on the market. Soon after 44 Edenvale Road was available to be purchased. The decision was made to go ahead.
Planning went ahead and by July the outline was prepared and a formal application for a government subsidy was sent to parliament. Fundraising among the Churches was commenced in November 1964. In February 1965 “The Edenvale Home Trust Board” was incorporated as a Charitable Trust.
By 1967 funding had been secured and the building project got underway. Haughey, Fox and Partners (Tom Haughey was an original board member) were the architects and engineers for the project.
In July 1968 the Social Security Department accepted the home as an approved Home for welfare purposes with the provision of supplementary government assistance.
Edenvale Home & Hospital was officially opened by the then Minister of Health, The Hon. D. McKay on the 23rd of November 1968, with honored guest, His Worship the Mayor of Mt. Eden Mr. R. C. Mills in attendance.
For more than 50 years now, Edenvale Home & Hospital has been a welcoming home for the aged.
